Dennis DeYoung (Styx) is another pop/rock musician who, like Benny Andersson and John Lennon, first started out on accordion.

Oh, and here's a story:

I once took an ensemble class at the Nashville Jazz Workshop in which we played the jazz-fusion music of Weather Report. I was on piano and synth for the class. Very difficult music, to say the least.

And if that wasn't enough pressure, our teacher was Chester Thompson, who actually played drums in Weather Report! A very nice guy, but we were all sort of intimidated by him, to be honest.

At one point, during a break in the class, he stops me in the hallway and says, "Hey, I heard you play accordion."

I sheepishly say "yes" and prepare myself for the ribbing I'm about to get for it from him.

Instead he grinned and said something along the lines of, "You know Joe played accordion! He'd bring one out on the road sometimes and just tear it up. Man, he was good!"

He was talking about the late, great Joe Zawinul--a pioneer in the use of electronic keyboards and synthesizers in jazz who, as it turns out, first started out playing accordion.

"Fred Astaire played the accordion--almost as
well as he danced. Here, he played in the
band in Flying Down to Rio"

Sorry... no freaking way Fred Astair plays, at least not in that movie (lol).  I own that movie, and you can blatantly tell that is not really playing... I believe that's a doctored accordion, most of the time you cannot even hear an accordion!  Smile

Check it out.
