Might as well talk about it. Yesterday was my third "organized" (ie with permission) busking outside my friend's bakery. Although I have busked a few times, this is more like a gig, with my case open for those welcome tips! It's a pretty low traffic area, so more for exposure for me, hopefully leading to meeting musicians and/or "real" gigs or starting a new band, now that covid is "over".

Pretty much played an hour, took a break, and played till the end of the second hour, repeating a few of my favorite tunes. People seemed to enjoy the music and most tipped, even a few fives, inflation?

Had one guy dancing happily and commenting on my "Polka King" hat, a story in itself. The original Polka King (whom I had the pleasure of meeting say 30 years ago) liked to drive around the county on his tractor, blasting polka tunes. A famous local character, with a craft beer named after him. When people ask I say, "Someone's gotta do it!" Even though polkas are just one part of my tunes. A tough act to follow, but someone's gotta do it....

Really separates out the tunes I really know from those I don't, and plenty of practice getting from lost on the wrong notes to back home to the tonic. Also for general improvising, especially over chords, and to stretch out the tunes. I did sing one song as promised and it went well, will sing more this Saturday.

Anyway, today I'm throwing the old Piatanesi in the car and going to the farmers' market where I hope to see the guy I sold the concertina to who wanted to teach me to play and I figured out the lick he showed me. Last time I missed him because he left an hour early. I'd like to take over if he leaves early today. Maybe check out the organizers and try to get on the list for farmers' markets next summer.

Anyway, third busking was good, tiring though, my brain was scrambled by the end, was trying to play Piemontesina Bella and my fingers kept going to Amore Mio non Piangere, it was weird. So yeah, bucks are rubbing off their velvet and does are walking around with spotted fawns, that time of year again. Wish me luck!

sounds like you have made a lot of progress and are enjoying this !
Thanks Ventura, that means a lot coming from such a pro as yourself. So yeah, checked the other farmers' market and the button box guy wanted to leave after 2 hours so I filled in for an hour until people began to leave because of rain. Quite fun, made about $20. He plays every other week so it could be a good opportunity this summer and maybe organized sharing next summer. Btw, he wants to give me a couple accordions that Jerry S. made into musette, so more upcoming projects!

I have done a bit similar over the last few months. I call myself an invited busker as the client normally give me a sub and i keep the tips. On a good gig up to 80 euros. I did a few care homes but i think it's not for me at the moment.

Congratulations, sounds like you're having a great time which is the most important reason to play. Your sense of accomplishment comes through loud and clear. The part where people were dancing shows that you're a true entertainer.

A few years ago I was asked to accompany a vocalist and as a result became involved with a couple of social clubs where I've become an integral part because of my playing so I "busk" two or three times a month at various at various events. In fact they've even changed dates for get togethers when I have had a scheduling conflict.

Keep up your efforts, it's great to hear about your successes.

Thanks and best of luck to you, Valski, sounds like you've got it going on!

4th busk went well, just an hour as summer season remains busy for yours truly. Some interesting people though, and I managed a couple new songs.

More interesting is that I gave my friend his first bass lesson and he picked it up pretty well, could understand the concept of following chords and where the 1 and 5 are. And his girlfriend used to sing in bands, so there is hope for my next band!!!! 2 years and covid later.🤞🤞🤞🤞🤞🤞

Goal for today us 2 hours at the farmers market without repenting any songs (except maybe my one original for emphasis. It's 50 (10 C) and overcast, possible shower. Can I do it?

Only lasted one hour. Too much rain and heavy wind, 15 mph or so, from the north. Everything flying around. Not easy to play with gloves, even thin ones. Not many people hanging out, I made $3. 😅 This shows that it's pretty necessary to have a lot of memorized music. I can do an hour no problem, have to work up to 2 hours minimum.

I can't even remember what I had for breakfast, let alone 2 hours of music. Too many concussions from when I was a fighter.

Rule number #1, never busk when it's cold, if people can't take their hands out their pockets how they gonna throw you cash....
Rule number #2, never busk if it's windy, all the fifty dollar bills will blow away ....

Pretty much kills half the year here. I've never seen a fifty, but I did get a $2 at the other farmers market.

well you did it, and that's what counts
Thanks! Yup, hung in for an hour. Gonna try again next Tuesday, hopefully a warmer day. This far out predicted to be sunny, 60, 2-4 mph. No prob!

How fun, Tom! Seems like you're enjoying it, and what a great way to keep a learning edge going and challenge yourself. Plus the chance to attract other musicians for that soon-to-be band. There's a feed and garden store in my town that sometimes has musicians play on the weekends. I'm working up the nerve and the chops to inquire about playing there--for some reason I really want to sit on a haybale playing accordion while people shop for plants and pet food. What's that about...

I think it means that fall is in the air. You can do it! You don't have to do 1 or even 2 hours to start, maybe ask if you can "play a few tunes."
