A real formal proposal to create a standardized Accordion Emoji is underway. Something like this:

It will go to the Unicode Consortium that decides which new emoji will be included on phones and computers all over the world.

You can read the Unicode guide to the proposal process here: https://www.unicode.org/emoji/proposals.html#emoji_proposals_form

Im getting help from the nice folks at Emojination.org. Theyve gotten a number of new emojis like the Hijab, Sauna, and Broccoli approved. Especially considering the global popularity of the instrument I think it has a pretty good chance.

If youd like to see the draft proposal (which may be nearly done) its here for now: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1Y1r1z6_XeXU3Uws2FImAymFSs_Y6wNoVOwFxJhaG5yQ/edit?usp=sharing

The process seems to take a couple of years to go through all the hoops until new emoji end up on everybodys phones. Itll be interesting to see how it goes.

  Is there a danger of anti-Buttonism here?

When I work with folks on the design I'm going to advocate for some sort of button-box. Ideally it will include accordions, concertinas, bandoneon.... We'll see how much of a piano-accordion push-back we get.

There may be more piano accordions in the world (hmm?) but I think of the button accordion as more universal. All accordions have buttons (well, almost all), but not all have piano keyboards.

There may be debate on the emoji committee.

Thanks, Bruce, for responding.
On a less whimsical note - a great idea; more power to your elbow!

Pleased to say that over the summer the #AccordionEmoji has gone through almost all the official hoops, and if all goes as planned, should be announced publicly in March 2020. It would then trickle out over the year onto peoples phones and devices (are digital accordions emoji compatible?) Apple usually comes last, so the emoji would be available in iPhone by September. So thatll be amusing.

The proposal-art ended up being a three-row button-box, but different services will design their own, so I expect quite a few piano accordions. Maybe it was good to get the buttons out there in hopes some of the official emoji designers will use them.

The finished proposal is here for your perusal:

Heres the list of all the upcoming draft proposals:
(I was hoping for Disco Ball, but theyre having trouble making it not look like a christmas ornament.)

The EmojiNation.org folks helped a Lot in writing the proposal and the whole procees!

Looking good, thanks Bruce. We're doing better than neckties!

The problem can be solved by using different emoji's or emoticons for the different accordion types.

One image for a piano accordion.
Another image for a B-system CBA.
Another for a C-system CBA.
Other images for other accordion types.

A unique symbol for different types is impossible.
If you want unicode or a unique symbol, one could also use only the bellows.
But then your image is only a partial representation of the accordion(s) as musical instrument.

Why not more than one emoticon?

I don't know... seems like Bruce was faced with a Herculean task just to get one emoji.

I think the choice is pretty solid myself. It's recognizable as an accordion to everyone on the planet, and the three-row is very common after all.

Looking forward to using it on my phone in March! (and on my iPad in September...)
