I am very new to digital instruments. I play entirely at home for my own pleasure. I resently picked up a Roland FR-1x. I am not worried about the small keyboard because if I need greater range, I can just use my acoustic box.

I want to set it up with quality external amplification. I see on Roland’s website that they recommend the CM-30. Is this a quality amp? Would I only need 2 cables to hook to my FR-1x to use it? My price range is up to $500. I would welcome any suggestions on how to set up a sound system for my FR-1x.

I have two CM-30s that I used to use with a Sem CIAO reedless. These are good amplifiers if you need them for practice or for small locations. I have found that although they have many options as far as input and output are concerned, you can hear a lot of distortion from them at higher volumes. Contrast that with a fifty-watt Yorkville, a model which is now being sold under the Traynor label, which gives no audible distortion even cranked all the way up and costs about the same as a pair of Roland CM-30s. I have also found that the power connections, both on the cords and in the amps is a weak point and that servicing a CM-30 can be a nightmare because the insides are filled with some kind of polymer or epoxy.

You need to consider the size of the room in which you will be playing. Rolands larger amps perform much better than the CM-30s and would be much better suited to larger locations. On the other hand, there are many, MANY amplifier brands and models to consider. So, speak to someone with a lot of experience with amplification and listen to some amps that fit the size of the room and audience in which you will be performing using your FR-1x to drive them. Above all, you need to go for a full-range amplifier, sometimes referred to as a keyboard amplifier. Do NOT, under any circumstances consider a guitar amplifier, since its range will be limited.

If just playing for yourself at home you may also consider a pair of active studio monitors, like the KRK RP-series.

At the same time could be an upgrade to your home cinema system :ugeek:

Just a little food for thought for you if it is not for professional use:

1. If you have a home stereo setup, you could plug your accordion in to that. A small dual phono to 1/4 adapter is easy to make and quite cheap!

2. Almost any computer store (ie: Best Buy, etc...) sells speaker setups for computers. Pretty much any 2+1 (two speakers and a subwoofer) in the $100-$200 range, would give you more than enough volume for home use.

Thank you everyone for the great input and suggestions. I have a fairly high end Bose speakers for my laptop. I will try using these.

Note: I have been using the Behringer b205 Eurolive for years when I do small gigs. Works great with mic and accordion. This is only 150 Watts? Imagine what the Mackie can do!
