re: Basil Bunelik "Accordion for Beginners”
As this came up in a post, I thought I'd offer a quick summary:
In less than 60 pages of A4 this book goes from absolute beginner to playing tunes in a variety of keys/time signatures with techniques for both hands.
For your £10 +pp (say 14 euro) you have 52 tunes +CD and video on Vimeo .
A Volume 2 –“Accordion for Musicians” is promised.
Basil Bunelik has put a lot of thought into his book. The aims of each of the 6 sections are laid out. The tunes on offer are chosen to give more than enough to cover the skills before moving on. There is music from 20 different countries.
This is not just a rewrite of any other Beginners’ book. Neither is it designed to make the author a rich man. You get the impression of someone who loves his music, enjoys teaching and wants to share his experience and enthusiasm more widely.
Teaching insights:
1. If you want to demonstrate phrasing what better than to put the words to the songs?
2. Two of the first 3 tunes are in F# Pentatonic! Why? Because the black notes are easier to find!
3. My favourite quote – A tune may be hard to read but quite easy to play.
As he says:
“Simply great tunes from around the world.”
