Without visually inspecting (yet) I suspect that one or two bass reeds are hitting their valves after the button is released. Is this an indication that the reed is sitting too deep, or has been set to bend at an incorrect point along its length?

Very hard to say without visual inspection, especially visual inspection on a tuning table to see what the reed and valves are doing.

Beemer: You say 'after the button is released'. Releasing the button suggests cutting off the sound and the reed stopping vibrating.
As suggested above I think it will need to have the reed block removed and its action observed on a tuning table.
(I know a repairman in So. Lanarkshire if you get stuck).
