Just a quicky...
Why is a bellows pad a good idea?
Is there a size of instrument below which the advantages become negligible?
Thank you all

They stop me pulling holes in wooly jerseys ,the bellows pins are the usual reason.

Without the pad, the bellows keeps snagging at the buttons of my shirt. Also, the pad cover is some sort of slippery fabric. I think that minimizes the wear of the bellows.

Also, for the Roland FR-1xb, the cord of the earphone is tugged between the accordion back and the pad. It's much tidier that way.

I don't know at what size of the instrument the pad is not useful. My big Fisitalia came with pad installed. My Roland FR-1xb and Cavagnolo (about the same size) didn't come with pad. I installed pads on them. My little Pigini doesn't have pad, and I don't miss it.

Back Pads have two Functions (1) They prevent wear on clothing and (2) most important they prevent excessive wear on the bellows. JIM D.

I have noticed that with modern accordions, they use a bellows pad to avoid having to put celluloid in places it is never seen. This means the accordion is designed to have a pad. It is not an after thought.
