I like a lot of the stuff this guy plays, so thought Id use one of his YouTube videos to test out embedding videos into posts.

Interesting... I never thought of using the base as a drone. Must be difficult to balance the level of volume from drone to melody.
Something for me to experiment with.

I have read it commeted that he is also clever in where he sits at the bottom of the stairs.....it creates a nice little miniature ampthi~theatre to bounce the bass off.....I now try to stand (or sit) with my bass side pointed to a wall or back to a corner....the bass sound bounces off and gives you a little more feedback and a bit more ooomp for your pah.....or drone...and it works....there are of course those who frown  on droning the bass.......apparently because learners often will do it until they have mastered the little staccato motions to play in the approved  manner ;)

I like the drone personally....Karen Tweed is another artiste who uses it a bit...not my total cup of tea but she is a good playerand has some nice riffs and licks :D

Jarvo, Karen doesn't drone all that much - but Paul Hutchinson does. It's his trademark!

By the way, lovely tune that. I play tunes like that with the Petite Vache for French dancing.

I have not heard PH,need to catch him ......and I did say KT drones "a bit" not all that much but when she does it's good.....to read Mr G Garside you would tyink it is a total sin !!....but enuff about personalities...........

A melody against a fixed drone is one of the most ancient forms in music. It’s hard to see how a “traditionalist” could object, unless that is, it doesnt square with their tradition..

I would imagine the drone support arose from both the desire to have some form of harmonic accompanyment and the limitations of the instrument to hand. I'm only guessing here but it is reasonable to assume that the trad tunes played on an accordion using a drone a direct transcriptions from simpler instruments.

Paul Hutchinson uses the drone as he plays a lot of Playford and other old old tunes, to create that medieval type feel of Hurdy Gurdy or bagpipes. As far as I understand. Of course recordings from the actual middle ages are quite rare, so we can only approximate a simulation...
