Here in the USA the royalty companies, such as ASCAP , are targeting Open Mic venues shutting them down if musicians are playing Covers of songs protected by copy right laws - unless a fee is paid by the venue. - notwithstanding these are free events with no money exchanged. I believe the law applies to public places too, such as parks and street corners, but have no personal experience being called out when I play on the Town Green, at least not yet.
