I am having a problem setting the chin switch function on my FR-8X. When I power up the 8X, the chin functions work and are set to Chin 1 = Register 1, Chin 2 = Register 12, Chin 3 = Register 10.
My use of the 8X is mostly in “User Program” mode. So, I would like to change the chin switch function. When I change the chin function using menu 13.5 to “UPG Up” (Also, do a “Write” to save my changes), no change has occurred. I select a user program bank, but when I press the chin switch, nothing happens. Also, when I power off the 8x, and return to power on, the chin switch functions revert back to registers 1, 12, and 3.
What am I missing in this procedure to change the chin switch function?

Never tried to play with it... but, I know that Richard Noel changes the chin registers to different things based on different UPG sets, so I know that this works, but if you are shifting from 1 UPG to another UPG, in that 2nd UPG you have to again reprogram the chin registers to remap the chin switch to do what you want it to do.

What you are looking for is to change the settings you need on a per UPG basis.

If I get the time, I'll play with it a bit and do a video, if you need.

I was trying to do the change "globally". I have done a lot with the Richard Noel Banks, making small changes to my liking. I have modified his program bank UPB files but have not worked with a UPG file. How do I get to the UPG file from the UPB file? Can I do it with the PC Editor? Thanks for your help.

Just a silly question but after making the changes, are you saving them at all? This is done by doing the following:
  1. Modify all parameters you would like to use.
  2. Press and hold the [MENU/WRITE] button to jump to the “Write” page.
The display shows the following page.
  3. Use the [DATA/ENTER] knob to select “System”.
  4. Press [WRITE] to proceed.
Should be saved after even turning off and on the V-accordion.

To create a UPG file (a saving of all your program files), use the export option:

Enjoy!

Thanks for your video Jerry. It got me going in the right direction. Here's the details if anyone is interested.

1. In User Program mode, select the User Program (Register 1-14) to be changed.
2. Deselect User Program mode. This puts you in the 8X work area (WA) set that is the basis of the User Program.
3. Press the "Menu" button and go to 13.5 where you will see the chin switch1, 2, 3 choices. Pick your choice (UPG Up, Register No., etc.).
4. Hold the "Write" button until you get to "User Program"
5. Press "Write" again. Select the Bank and Number that you want. The default is where you are at.
7. Press "Write" again. This is the screen to change the name. The default will be what you have.
8. Press "Write" again. You will get the prompt "Operation Complete".
9. The chin switch change has now been implemented.

Note this is for one UPG. Chin switch designations must defined in every User Program. For example, if you want to have Chin Switch #1 select the next "down" and Chin Switch #2 the previous "up" in User Program memory, you need to do this for each UPG (like incrementing up or down the 14 register switches). The Chin Switch functions must be defined in each of the 14 User Programs.
