Hi all,

A week or so ago I bought myself a secondhand FR1-X from a private seller. I only gave it a quick test as I was waiting to start my online lessons yesterday. Everything went ok and I was given a few simple practice exercises to do for next week. I started doing those tonight but the lowest "D" stopped sounding. I tuned it off and on again (in good ol' computer fashion) but it still didn't sound. I went through all the other keys and also found that the lowest Bb and highest F# don't sound either.
I removed the batteries and replaced them with a new, fully charged set but it made no difference.
Any idea what's wrong and how I can fix it or have I just bought a duffer?

Sorry to hear that!
If I recall correctly there was a thread a view weeks / month ago explaining how to open the treble key chamber and clean the contacts. It was tedious though…!

Obvious first thing to try: check whether the same notes in the inner rows do work. If they do, we are talking about a keyboard problem. Next thing to check is key velocity in the vicinity. Key attack velocity is used for modifying patches such as the Scat register, and release velocity is used for controlling button noise on the accordion patches. If you cannot make a difference here, that is also indicative of a keyboard problem.

You can disassemble the keyboard reasonably easy I think, and it contains a number of rubber strips. Those are easy to place in the wrong orientation which will cause such problems (they have tiny air holes that have to face all in the same direction). The underside of those strips contains carbon contacts: if they are worn down, those strips need replacing. You can change some of those strips through to see whether a particular strip is a problem and possibly make strategic replacements (the fifth row strips will tend to be very lightly used and not all that important in play).

Hello,
The information that your accordion is (was) a PA is interesting:
On a PA, the treble keyboard matrix is scanned by groups of 8 keys :
If one contact of the 24 pins connectors is bad, you will loose :
either 8 or 2 successive keys (26 = 3*8+2)
either 4 or 3 keys (being 8 notes spaced)

The 3 notes that you mention : D, Bb, F# are 8 notes spaced (4 tones):
For me, you should have only to correct the bad contact on the 24 pins cable.
Regards
Serge
