I've not gotten to see the restored Big Boy yet... hazard of living in BNSF land instead of UP now... but have lots of happy childhood memories of my dad and I chasing his little brothers around.
Yes. I grew up in a part of the west where "Uncle Pete" was the only show in town -- only show within a couple hundred miles, because they swallowed up Western Pacific, then Missouri Pacific, then Southern Pacific which had already merged with Rio Grande. It made for rather dull trainspotting compared to the many options there were in the East back then.
But UP had two other steam engines (still has, but retired one when they restored 4014), so you can usually see one in person every year or two if you live in their territory.
Unfortunately, here in Australia, our State Government owned railway was sold off to the Federal Government (decades ago) and much of it has simply been demolished since.
Trucks have taken over most of the distribution and transport industry and rail is barely hanging on.
It used to be said that a job in the railways was a job for life: more like marrying into a family!
Mostly gone, now.
