I have recently started play accordion after bidding on a "worn" Rigoletto 12 bass on E-bay.
Have been playing for a few weeks now and its starting to sink in! Have played the piano
for many years so the right hand is coming but the left hand has to catch up a little!
Any tips or useful information will always be welcome!

cheers!

Paul

Hi there, welcome from another piano convert; I took up accordion in the Spring and have not looked back. My tip: don't believe the voice that might at some stage whisper, this left-right co-ordination thing might never come together. Just keep practising and it WILL. Enjoy your playing, and this very helpful forum!

Welcome to the forum... Dolaucothi. And yep, keep at it.. it's just practice, practice, pra... You'll prob be more frustrated than us who don't have piano background, as we're useless on both sides for a long time... :)
Your left hand maybe wanting to do piano LH things, too.. whilst ours just wanted to go in our pocket..

Thanks you both! I'm just getting to the point where I am not straining to think about what I am doing, where my fingers are etc - just starting to put my hands where they need to go without to much concentration! One question - I have a 12 bass, which I am enjoying but would something like a 48 bass offer a wider range of music that I can play ?

Many thanks!

We dont know what method you are following to learn but certainly if reading music, yes 12 bass will be very limiting... very quickly as you seem to be making good progress. A 12 bass is essentially a childs starter. A 48 can do a lot in the right hands, 72 better still. But then you get into a debates about whether you should go for 120 if you can handle it.. 96 if you want a bit lighter, 72 if you want to busk/stroll etc.

See here for beginner resources http://www.accordionists.co.uk/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=817
the Duane Schnur stuff is well worth a look, you can look at the lessons (94 of them with sheets & sound clips!)and decide what level youre at and start there. They go up to grade 3 for sure, maybe 4.

Thanks Soulsaver - I think I need to do a little more research but the 72 bass seems attractive at the moment.
Many thanks!
