Hi, I'm a newbie to the accordion world, thanks to my wife who introduced me to this new instrument. I've been playing several instruments as amateur(ish) musician since I was at school (now I'm 55), but actually never played an accordion before. She's from Brazil, where there is a long tradition of accordion folk music, and she started taking lessons not long ago. I bought her an accordion for her birthday last year.. and started to envy her, so I got one for me too

Welcome! And congrats on starting with the accordion.

I don't know much about Brazilian folk music (although I do know some about Bossa Nova!). If I wanted to learn a good Brazilian tune on the accordion, which one should I learn? What's the "go to" song to play, that everyone in Brazil would be familiar with?

You might try this one ---

Good question, but it's a big country with a long musical history. Tico Tico no Fubá may be pretty well known in Brazil, but it's like a century old, so ... it may not. (Widely known outside Brazil, for sure.) Asa Branca is another oldie, 1947, that would be pretty familiar and is more in the northeast tradition where a lot of the accordion action is. And it would be a heck of a lot easier to learn in a hurry for a surprise.

Hi, its hard to point to a single one: As Donn said, its a large country, and each region has its own particular styles.

Heres a sample from North-East Brazil, played by one of their most known players, Dominguinhos:

A couple more samples from my beloved South Brazil:
