i am working in an German/Hungarian Restaurant. I got much of the popular German Music down pat, but looking at expanding with Hungarian music. More on the basic polka and waltz and 4/4 time. What do accordion players play at typical dances for Hungarian Music?

Larry,

Try this Hungarian site:- www.harmonikainfo.hu.

Hit Galeria, then Videok, and if you watch the second video it will give you some idea. Unfortunately, the names of the tunes are not given.

However, if you navigate to Tagjaink (members), youll get a list of popular Hungarian accordionists, and you can look for them on You Tube

This guy has his own website, and if you hit zene (music), he has posted a few MP 3 clips of manageable sounding titles with the names of the tracks listed:-

http://www.kico.hu/

It should at least give you something to work on.

After a few days you can maybe try this:

Its really very easy (to listen to).

Hungarian accordion music is a bit of a mixed bag, athough they love the Balkan stuff. Zoltan Orosz is generally acknowledged as being the best contemporary Hungarian accordionist.

They also have their own version of gypsy accordion music:-

Some of the super-virtuoso Hungarian accordion music can be quite daunting due to polyrhythms/abrupt time-signature changes and trilly ornaments that are almost quartertone-ish. But there are good accordion and/or piano arrangements that are easy to play but still wonderfully authentic sounding. I like these books of folk tunes for accordion--One is Eastern European tunes including Hungarian, the other on Magyar Muszika, is a Hungarian-only focus:

The out-of-print Kammen Internaional Dance Folio books of sheet music also contain great Hungarian and other Eastern European tunes (Kammen No. 9 is accordion arrangements, Kammen No. 1 is piano but easily workable for accordion).
