Just bought this piano accordion it has some issues , needs waxing and valve work .
The question is the base button has no dimple , anyone know if this was normal for this accordion ?
Thank you Bill
Back in those days, the production line may have had 10 accordions where 9 of them had dimpled buttons, and then for #10 they ran out... and instead of waiting 30 min to get the button from across the street, they used what they had on hand and moved on.
In the end, NO BIGGIE.
If it really bothers you, you can carefully drill it out and leave it at that or add a crystal.
heck back in THOSE days they were still figuring out how to
BUILD accordions in Chicago to compete with New York and
Italy and soon San Francisco.. i wouldn't be surprised to find
every accordion they built that year was a little bit different
than the last one, though the Gloria model line was around
for a long time for ItAm, and bridged them making their own and
ordering boxes from Italy to re-brand
probably would be a cool box to re-build.. looks like it's gonna need
bellows too.. should be fi=un to play and have a way different
tone than modern and post WW2 accordions
there were very few "standards" back then to guide builders.. it was
more "look at what they did, lets steal that idea, lets do it one better"
The first accordion that I bought long ago looked very similar to this. Hey, I paid $50 for it! It also had many issues. It was labeled "Soprani", made in Italy I presume.
The ornate grills must have been cut out and decorated by hand. No laser cutters or CNC machines back then. It must have taken many hours. How little did those craftsmen get paid for this tedious work?
