These instruments are very rare:

quote:
" Two gifted Russian masters Nikolay From and Nikolay Kosorukov, who had been experimenting with the sound and shape of bayans in the mid- 20-s of the XX century, designed originally shaped timbre bayans with distinct sounding. Their endeavor resulted in creating bayans acoustically reminiscent of wind instruments for a symphony orchestra (flute, hoboe, clarinet, horn, bassoon, tuba). The instruments have at their core specifically designed wooden resonators that are organ-like and interact with metallic voices. Russian Timbre ensemble preserves the last one-of-a-kind set of instruments made by Nikolay Kosorukov. "

Fascinating - a project that is 100 years old - when there were surely more pressing questions .
Is such curiosity/invention still alive and well?

This curiosity is most certainly still alive. If you search for the AKKO Quartet on YouTube you can see at least one such instrument, made by AKKO, being used.

This AKKO Quartet video is very nice, a selection of arrangements , in the J S Bach Air you can see some of the inside cassottos or tone chamber / called "resonators" by Russians and Ukrainians (0'45'')
