I finally made a visit to a local accordion club meeting here in Montreal, and it was certainly interesting, fun, and in a small way, slightly depressing... lol
Apparently for the first time, they chose a theme (country) and many came in cowboy hats and attire
Ive been out of the accordion scene for something like 35+ years and to even see people not in videos playing live was very interesting for me. Initially I found myself doing what I should not have been doing and that was listening critically and wondering how I could play the music. Bad move. As soon as I stopped that (a short minute later), it was much better and I started to have a much better time. I just wish that I was not the youngest person in the room, that was the slightly depressing part... lol I did do a fair bit of socializing and talking to many people there, including the president of the club (and owner of Accordeons Excellence here in Montreal).
I liked it well enough that I may come back in November and see what the chosen theme will be then, but dont know if I will bring my accordion. And of all things, I sat most of the evening next to a lovely lady who had lost her husband 2 months earlier, and was trying to get me to buy her husbands 8 month old FR-8X for $4000... what a sales lady she was! lol.
The sad part... I had my mother with me and this was her first time socializing since my fathers death this past June. It was bitter sweet as I saw some smiles, and I saw some tears, memories of, I am sure, the times my father and her danced or listened to certain songs that were played that evening.
I hope to be able to see how they do things in Ontario at the Hamilton Accordion Club one day, it would be a very interesting comparison.
