The guy is excellent ! That accordion reminds me of the one that "Frosini" played, but I think the one he is playing in the videos is all buttons....the video is kind of dark to visually it's a bit of a problem......anyone else?
EMan,
What Alf HΓ₯gedal is playing is a " Finto " piano accordion: a purely CBA made up to look as if I it could be a PA. Don't ask me why, it was a thing in the day (the '20s).
This is exactly the kind of instrument that Frosini did play himself.
Alf has a "thing" for Frosini and has recorded/replicated much of Frosini's music on YouTube using such finto piano accordions.
See here:
In the book The Golden Age of the Accordion there are excerpts here and there from old accordion company catalogs; an interesting feature of items available in the 1920s are accordions which have a piano keyboard plus a row of buttons below the keys, usually two but sometimes three. Somewhere...
Wilddog, if I remember correctly, it was a matter of snobbery, fashion and popularity in the USofA that caused him to have the false piano keys installed.
Pianos were 'respectable', button accordions and concertinas were considered ever so 'common' and low class.
EMan,
As far as I know, yes, fake (or "dummy ") piano keys ( hence the name " finto" or "fake" piano accordion), but not completely worthless ( as a CBA) as you can hear From Alf HΓ₯gedal's ( and several other enthusiasts') playing!
An interesting variant.
