Recommendations for place to go for a (hopefully) minor repair, and for online teaching course

Hello,

I recently purchased a Hohner 20M Musette.

It was an ebay purchase, but the seller had a very good rating,so I went for it.

To my admittedly uneducated ears, all the notes sound the same on push and pull, but two of the black keys are a bit sticky.

Where in the Rhode Island area would people suggest I take this for repair?

Also, I've purchased the Mel Bay Teach Yourself Accordion, and the Alfred Teach Yourself to Play Accordion.

The Alfred seems to be the better alue, because it not only gives you access to online audio files to learn with, but also two hours of downloadable video.

It is the Downloadable that I find particularly helpful; since I'm able to go at my own pace with feeling pressured by a subscription running out.

I did consider, before I realized that the Alfred book had the downloadable videos, the Online Academy for Irish Music Basic accordion class by Alan Kelly, which seems reasonable at about $100.00 for 6 month's at today's exchange rate. I may still do this later, since it teaches 9 separate tunes, which seems like a reasonable exchange. (I've since come to understand the the musette tuning is not the standard for Irish music, but as I am temperamentally a solo type, perhaps this is not too much of an obstacle.)

There is also the Accordion Life Academy, Which seems thorough, but pricier at $47.00 per month or $470.00 for a year.

I'd appreciate any other recommendations people may have.

Thank you

Welcome Jeb. About two years ago, a forum member created this spreadsheet of all of the known accordion shops in the US and Canada. These are businesses that specialize in accordion sales and/or repairs.

Two repair shops near you would be Accordions Tech in West Harwich, MA (Cape Cod), or the New England Accordion Connection and Museum Company in North Caanan, CT. I have no experience with either of them. My last accordion repairs were at shops that have closed.

I can't recommend any particular teaching material from personal experience, but I would expect anything from the Online Academy for Irish Music would be good if you like Irish music. I think they have three piano accordion courses by different instructors.

Thank you both for your replies.

I realized that over the years, I have known several people who played Irish music here in RI, and it is possible that they can steer me to someone more local.

I have realized that there are only two thumbscrews holding the grill over the keys, so maybe I'll take a look.

I'm very leery of doing any dismantling that requires holding or clamping several keys in place however.

Welcome Jeb!

There are a few from RI on here. I escaped but I still love it there! Unfortunately I don’t know any repair people in RI. Good luck to you!

Hi Jeb, if you’re still looking for an online teacher mine is 30.00 an hour. He’s excellent and will teach any box or system you prefer. Please contact me directly if you would like more information. Unlike Accordion Academy which I believes requires the student to purchase a set package for lessons,my teacher allows you to come and go as you please. Accordion Academy is I believe run by a group of Serbian players. They are probably the best accordionists in the world, very well-trained.
