I love the 'look' of them, the sound less so.
Necessity being the Mother of Invention.
As explained in one of the descriptions, the purpose was to compensate for the lack of sensitivity in the early years' recording devices.
There was a chap who played regularly at a local market for many years much to the amusement, or otherwise, of the patrons.

We had a guy playing one at my local accordion shindig last summer. First one I had seen or heard.
Sounds kinda halfway between a violin and a horn just like you'd expect it to. (Which is OK if you don't care what instrument is playing a tune, but is sorta too bad if you like violins or horns.)
