In an echoey hall everyone can hear you - the sound is bigger, bolder, more resonant, it's full-on.

Enjoy some excerpts of a fantastic concert by the marvellous Ivano Battiston (accordion) and Domenico Del Giudice (guitar).

The little background bumps, coughs, squeaks all add to the atmosphere. The accordion and guitar sound even more intense and full. Those reeds rumble while the strings twang, big style. There is no doubt these instruments have a lovely tone. I think the modern classical accordion has a particularly antique quality that belies it's fairly recent development. Like an old harmonium but with a bigger bite...

The concert was undoubtedly fantastic, but the competence of the recording technician is somewhat questionable.

It could have been recorded on a camera phone on a stand... I'm delighted someone captured it anyway.

...there was a bit around 8 mins 20 when the accordion player is playing a Piazzolla solo and it sounds awesome, and then I realised he was playing the melody on the left hand and it was soooo musical. It was like a real masterclass in "expressive virtuosity". Battiston is next level...
