The sides on the button accordion. What is the material used today to seal the ends?

The button accordion I'm fixing has string on the edge of the sides to seal the ends to the bellows. But that is old and needs replaced. I used an insulation putty which works great, but I don't like that it's putty.

Is there something else I can use to seal the ends?

Use the gasket tape designed specifically for this task. It comes in different thickness (I mostly use 2mm but have some 3mm in case it's needed) and width (I mostly use 5mm but I have 4mm and 6mm for when it's needed).
Look at http://www.carinidena.it/MS5ECOMMERCE60/jsp/eco_cc_home_bs_portlet.jsp?p=dettarti&codarti=2626 for instance.
