I'm looking for a portable way to play accordion on my laptop via a USB/midi keyboard.

Currently I do this with Arturia software and a synth patch which is kind of a CPU hog and the libraries are a couple of gigabytes from which I use only my accordion patch, so it's not very portable.

I know you can use a wrapper to play a VST standalone but I can't find a good (free) accordion VST.

Any ideas?

Before I got my FR-8X, I started to get in to virtual instruments and all, and I too was looking around for a good 2 months. The conclusion... there are no good and free accordion VST sounds out there, I found one really bad and free one, and I found a few very expensive good ones, none of which I wanted bad enough to want to pay their price for.

Short answer... the good and properly sampled instruments are all surprisingly expensive and there are only perhaps 3-4 of them out there at the time I was looking.

Today I did a quick YouTube search and there are several options, though again... nothing free:

If you already have a full version of Kontakt, you may want to look into a $30 Kontakt library called Neo Soundstation. It has nothing but nice bread and butter sounds. Just about every single sound is excellent. No waste. The accordion sounds alone are worth $200. Neo Accordion in the the library has all the treble registers of 4 reeds with keyswitches. I like them better than Guerrini Kontakt. Another thing is that the whole library is less than 3 GB. Very lean, and yet sounds excellent.

good find certainly usable...but I only have Kontakt player. will it work then?

Im no expert, but I believe it wont work. I think the full version of Kontact is needed.

The developer has to pay a fee to NI for any library to work in a free version of Kontakt. It gets expensive. That's why some libraries are available only for the full version.

well thanks for the reply

the search continues: I was hoping to be able to ditch big host programs like Kontakt and DAW's in favor of a small package like that one ideal VST or some other dedicated program I hadn't thought of
