An old thread states that there are some Weltmeister accordions with the cossotto chamber mounted on the outside of the accordion. Could anyone quote some model numbers so that I can search Youtube to see what they sound like.

Hi, if I understand correctly, you mean Weltmeister models that have a switch on the grill, which, when activated, closes all the holes on the grill and that muted sound imitates a cassotto. This is called sordino, if I'm not mistaken. I have an accordion like this - Weltmeister Stella. The sound that you get is something in between cassotto and non-cassoto, but it definitely isn't as mellow as a full cassotto sound, because it's just an imitation of a cassotto and the physics behind it are totally different. There are different types of Stella models and the ones with this type of grill look and sound like this one:

That Sordina (Grill Mute) first showed up on Italian accordions 100 years ago. It can be found on some Scandalli models up to
the 40's.

Oh they continued those "Sordina" flaps way later than that. I owned a Scandalli that had those in the 70's. :)

Presently in the ownership of my aunt that wanted it, as I had moved up to my Hohner Morino at the age of 13.
I loved that accordion, it was/is a great little box! :)

The only manufacturer that *I believe* had anything close to having the Cassotto close to the outside was Iorio (creator of the Cassotto design/concept).

Not a very practical design compared to today, but this was one of the first Cassotto designs ever made. Cassotto, by it's very nature has to be internal as basically it is the way the reeds are placed in an internal housing in specific orientations... so an "external Cassotto" is pretty much not possible, unless you have the reed blocks outside the accordion too... lol
