It seems like AGES since my last public performance, but only 10 weeks since I quit the Morris side I played with. But an accordion gig beckons tomorrow! I'll be joining a 5-piece rock band, with this set list:

Rockin' All Over the World
2.4.6.8 Motorway
Hot Love
We love to boogie
Baby I love you
Lean on me
Hound Dog
Sit Down
20th Century Boy
Only You
Red, Red Wine
Stand By Me

suggestion

for stand by me, if they are doing the original arrangement/recording

this is one where left hand stradella works so well with old 50's Rock n Roll

the rhythm is
1 anda 2 andb 3 andc 4 andd
with the chord button being hit sharply on time for
________2 ________andc __andd
while the bass fundamental is ONLY hit on the downbeat,
1

then Lean on Me.. the entire 8 bars of the intro can be
easily played on the bass buttons shadowing the lyric

the verse also on just bass notes, with the
"you need a hand" as a bass note run,
and "leannnnnnnn on" with a held bass note then up

Oh. Personal or musical problems or outgrowing it?

Hah. The lyrics to "Hot Love" got T-Rex banned from a whole lot of stations at the time. Superficially they sound like a bit of nonsense but... I'd like to be a fly on the wall to see just what you do with the accordion with that laid-back glam rock.

Quite a variety of styles!

The gig was kinda good but the new guitarist was too loud to be fun to play with so that was my last gig with the rock guys.

The morris side - mainly I'm quite serious about my music so I've joined a new side that have weekly music practice. I'm playing mandolin though as someone else already plays accordion

Bands are tough to keep organized. Not sure why some musicians are over playing above others? Even in some of New Country Music today, studio musicians over play in some instances. You lose the focus on the song meaning and lyrics.

In this case I was happy to explain it away as 'lead guitarist ego'. I saw this partly tongue in cheek as I know a couple of lovely lead guitarists, but I've also met some rotters!

guilty!
in my defence: it can be hard to adjust when moving back and forth between a band, and other performances where I am the only accompaniment, thus playing 'everything'

To be fair, anything one might characterize as “overplaying” that makes it onto a record is 100% the fault of the producer, not the studio musician. The producer is either specifically asking for it to be played that way, or, if it’s the musician’s idea, the producer is letting it through and not asking for a retake.
