I always make sure to throw some “fives” in with the “ones” in my case, to give the people the right idea! Last year I consistently made $10/hour in tips, mostly $1s. Small venue. Let’s see what this year brings. I’m thinking of including a “Tips Welcome” sign but I don’t know. I do get paid anyway, so the tips are gravy, but fun to contemplate.a pile of bills in the jar with a 100€ on top?
forget the advice - i'd rather know the venue![]()
Cool story, Gio, thanks! Technically I am not busking because I am getting paid, but the audience doesn’t know, since I have my case out for tips. To be honest, it’s not enough to make a difference, but it’s more fun to play for tips. Encourages the audience to participate and makes them feel good too. Part of the “up north tourist vibe.” Most people here still seem to carry some cash. Too much hassle to take credit cards, or QR code for payment or anything like that.In the words of Sir Paul Macartney ......in the very early days when the Beatles first started ,He recalls that they we known
as the Quarrymen ...... playing in Liverpool at some very rough and tough venues !! The audience used to throw money at them !! on to the stage !!! WOW . as the other 3 members of the group left the stage Paul would collect the money up from the stage floor . He recalled on many occasions the money picked up exceeded their fee for the gig !!!!
When i say the Early days I mean the very very Early days !!
Thinking about the present day I don't know what the tip protocol is ..............Very very very few people have CASH !!!on them !! so perhaps the busker has to have a credit card reader ..
When i used to play charity gigs at christmas time in the Local shopping malls we had teams of collectors with the jars shaking away !! this was all pre covid times !!
If you put in a few pounds of your own money in the Jar to help encourage people to tip !!!
Chances are someone would run away with the tip jar money !! It's a sad sign of the times ...........plus people do not carry cash !!
I await members views with regard to paying with cash or credit card .
I've seen people buy a £1 strip of raffle tickets at a pub function and many bought a strip and paid cashless by card !!
For an old boy like me brought up in a different ERA I always have a bit of cash with me !!!............
PS please don't tell anyone I always have a little bit of cash with me !!!............I do not want to be MUGGED !!!!
Yes indeed a sad reflection of the times we live in !!!Last weekend I visited a place I have not gone to for 7-8 years, the St. Joseph's Oratory, a large church. I loved it because it was old, built in the methods of the last century. I came in to the parking lot... no more people accepting donations for the parking, it's now an automated system. The front was COMPLETELY renovated in some distasteful modern flat cement format. They funnel you through a huge gift shop and super expensive restaurant before you can even get in to the Oratory.
Once past the new entrance, inside were the more familiar stations for praying. They had the usual boxes where people would throw in their donations when wanting to light a 3" candle, but the signs changed, where it was $1 minimum was now $2 for the now tiny 1" tall candles. The larger candles also went up, from $2 per candle to $8. It used to be donations where you give what you could, now they word it as if it as a mandatory minimum on the signs.
The final "insult"... no coins or cash? No problem, each station had a reader so you could tap your card, phone or watch and have it pull the donation digitally. They also had them dispersed randomly throughout the location like in the restaurant and doors that led outdoors.
Not too encouraging for me to see, a bit sad that this is just a sign of the times.
Tom, do something of the same... keep a small "Square" attached to your phone for people to "tap" their cards, phones or watches on for tips to help people that don't carry cash... lol
Tom you are my Hero . !!!!!!!.........getting a fee playing at the market and then also keeping the Tip monies ............Cool story, Gio, thanks!
