Starting out with no method book or teacher, I have found myself fingering chromatic versus diatonic passages very differently. Outside-in for chromatic and I use my thumb, inside to out for diatonic and I don’t use my thumb. I have to figure out a better way or is this switching the way it’s done?

Outside-in is normal for C system cba whereas inside-out is normal for B system. That's the way the keyboard is laid out.

There are very good videos on learning CBA on YouTube from the RoxysMusicStore channel, search for "Chromatic Myths and Tips".
