It's great to read these developments after the fact, and see that the damage was apparently easily repaired. Hope you will keep us posted on what you think of the instrument, and any peculiarities that you think might be interesting.

Congrats on successfully repairing it!

I have had to do all the same things, and a couple others, with every box I purchased from ebay. Welcome to the joys of shipping accordions. It really doesent matter how well they are packed, they show up with a little shipping damage.
Ben

There’s a packing trick, which is to put a line of cardboard somewhere in the Stradella. There’s a page on about it on the Allodi site as I remember.

Sorry for being vague.

There is another trick about using masking tape across the tops of all the bass buttons to keep them from going down too far.

I think the packing trick mentioned by Bob is the one to go for as the tape method will only work for light jolts. A thumping great whack (even if the box says handle with care) will still allow the bass mechanism to move down even if the buttons are stuck to the tape which still does the damage.

True, but it is hard to tell someone who is selling the accordion and scared to open/break it to:
undo the bass strap.
Find the screws holding the bass plate on and undo them.
Find some cardboard and shove it under the mechanism so that the buttons don't push.
Put the bass plate back on
redo the strap.

Some will, but most will not.
So for those that will not, it is at least something to have them take some masking tape and tape all of the buttons together, but not down. Then fix the sunk ones when they get there.

I've shipped some ( not over seas) witout damage. Padded them under the bass pistons to stop the drop down and taped the buttons to card in between.
