I sometimes see accordionists wear something on their left hand wrist.. such as this one:

What is this called and what's the purpose of it?

It's a kind of long glove without fingers. Pigini sells one (for way too much money for that it is). Not difficult to make one yourself when you know a bit about sewing.

Thanks Paul, what's the purpose of wearing it?

Or just use a black sock with the top cut out (and possibly a thumb hole)
The purpose is to keep the bass strap from grabbing and pulling on the skin of your wrist. Makes it easier to slide for long jumps.

Ah very interesting.. I guess I've never felt an issue there.

Personally I haven't either, but then I don't play hard enough to get a good sweat going to have an issue with my skin grabbing the leather... :)

I've made my own a couple of times )grey and 2 black ones). I find when I use the Free Bass with certain songs or play stradella songs with big jumps that it makes it easier. For it to work it's best, you need to have all leather bass strap. The cloth ones do improve, but only about half or less of the drop in resistance using the all leather ones. I also experience a lot less sweat on the wrist.

I made mine from a couple of my well used Jiu-Jitsu rash guards that I've replaced with new ones. It's kind of like a spandex material so super stretchy and very slippery, but rash guards are specifically made to wick body moisture away from the skin... perfect for this use. I've made mine very long on the forearm because that is where the bass strap sits when I play Free Bass on my Gola and Morino. Ordinarily one doesn't need ones that long otherwise.

Instead of a fingerless glove, I have made (with my wife's help) a cloth, stiffened with felt, sleeve to fit over the bass strap of most of my accordions. These sleeves overcome the tendency for the bass straps to stick to the back of my left forearm in warm weather.🙂

Thanks guys for the explanations! I have not felt an issue on the back side of my left hand. I have though, felt a little bit of uncomfortable on the "foreside," right below my wrist where it contacts the hard rectangular edge. But it is only occasional. That's why I was looking to see what these things are. But most of days I don't really feel it.

My hands get sweaty so I am a big fan of using these. It makes the friction consistent one day to the next and a lot easier to learn the bass leaps that way.
A cheap pair off ebay will last most of a year before the stitching falls apart.

@knobby - here's a suggestion...

The Accordionists Forum could have merch. An accordion player's glove would be SO COOL! I've never worn one before but I'd make an exception for the Accordionists Forum glove. Come to think about it, why not go the whole hog; key-ring, t-shirt, scarf, hoodie, umbrella, accordion cover, mug, capo (for drone notes), case sticker 'My other accordion is called Doris', Hats - wow hats would be a BIG WIN - think of all the fedora, cap and bunnet wearing accordionists - they'd loose their minds at the thought of Accordionists Forum headwear!

I would definitely buy a hat.

You can also use cheap (but stylish) fishnet gloves

Allows hand to slide and doesn't trap moisture.
Available on Amazon in different lengths starting at £2.50.
Also available in many colours for those of a disco persuasion.

Thanks for the idea. I’ve been using a cotton glove with the fingers cut off to stop my hand sticking on the bass board, but think I’ll go for some of these next (probably stick to black though).
