The Shape of Water post and The Book Thief post are about the use of accordion in films. Are there any more that you know of? I think maybe accordion can be heard in Germinal ( Generique Debut ) but not sure.

Accordion (or sometimes Bandoneon) is used in many movies. Amelie of course, Il Postino (if I remember correctly), those are just two that I recall right away.

Good thread idea!

Yes, Amelie is the king of accordion movies. {}
Time of the Gypsies
Urga: Close to Eden
Ratatouille

One of my all-time favorite soundtracks has only one accordion-heavy track, but its a fun one: list of credits one his website is a treasure trove of movies with accordion lurking somewhere in the soundtrack!)

Theres a brief accordion cameo in one of my favorite movies, Before Sunrise, playing Weiner Blut, but I cant find a YouTube clip of it.

Just discovered lots of references in Rob Howard's Vol 2 of An A to Z of the Accordion.

Didn't realise James Stewart was a player!

TV show Northern Exposure

The intro music starts at 1:20 if you want to skip the cow flinging discussion.

You forget the Godfather at your own peril. Capisci?

I watched a classic English film last night - "Saturday Night and Sunday Morning". The soundtrack was composed by Johnny Dankworth, and features quite a lot of accordion, rather lovely and almost entirely played on single reed - probably because Dankworth didn't want accordion but the director, Karel Reisz, insisted.

He must have been good. In the photo with Henry Fonda hes playing the treble keyboard with his left hand :o

Yes I know they must have printed the negative from the other side :ch

“Everything Is Illuminated” soundtrack has some beautiful tunes played by accordion. Also check out the fairly new (2010)Iranian film, “The Accordion.”

Ive heard accordion in a couple of Dutch movies, but I dont remember all the names right now.
Heres one from a childrens movie Pietje Bell. It takes place in the early 1900s, so the accordion fits in well:

Hi Phil,

1961 film "Greengage Summer" (released in the US as "Loss of Innocence.") Starring Susannah York, Jane Asher & Kenneth More.

The film is set entirely in France, and the opening music (and some of the incidental music) is played on an accordion.

Kind Regards,

Stephen.

Theme from Papillon (1973) would fit into this thread.
The intro and finale are accordion led..
The whole thing works as a standalone piece as well..

A standout gem would be the tango-infused soundtrack to Waking Life, the wistful, impressionistic, haunting animated feature film by Richard Linklater. All tracks but two of the soundtrack were composed by accordionist/pianist/composer Glover Gill of Austin, Texas, and the soundtrack is performed by his Tosca Tango Orchestra. You can hear strands of everything from old-school dance-hall tango to Piazzolla-inspired Tango Nuevo chromaticism in this wonderful music. Lots of lovely clips on the tube. This CD is one I often give as a gift.
