Joolie, I also feel that while your teacher's condition is very sad, it should not stop you from fulfilling your potential. It sounds to me like you are getting more trouble than benefit - you might want to consider finding someone who will teach via Skype, and you definitely should not be wasting your time with a 12-bass. Even learning from YouTube instruction videos and books would probably be more beneficial right now.

A little update: the daughter was understanding-- it sounds like the decline of her mother has been quite recent and dramatic. So a number of students have voiced their concerns at the same time as I started. I think the wrinkles between me and her were attributed to the stress of realizing her mother just can't do it anymore. The daughter has been giving me lessons and it's going very well. I have a regular 120-bass accordion rental and good instruction. She is in the process of moving back into her mother's studio/home and taking over. I'm glad we were able to work it out, and I appreciate your advice! I'm thoroughly tangled in learning bass lines of major, minor, 7ths! :)

You must be pleased to have been of help to the family.
Nice to know the lessons are up and running too!

Good to hear that is is turning out for the moment. A sad situation which I suspect pans out without it being immediately obvious to those close. Hope it goes well.
