at the risk of upsetting somebody somewhere I think that although of a high technical standard it sounded bloody awful and dare I say it unmusical!

George-- swiftly ducking to avoid the flack which will come hopefully from those who look but don't do much posting!

I dont think you should get flack George - it's you opinion and you can state it.
Some JS stuff I cant say sits well on my ears... but that's different tastes for you.

Thank goodness it's not just me then....this type of playing on an electric guitar is called "shredding".....technically very clever, but not really tuneful........academic and technical....musically tuneful?..(admittedly not MY strongest point  )...hmmmmm, the young lady is a brilliant and skilful player.....a given.......but this piece, not for me ...and not a sour grape in sight

Hi George: I must say this is the first time I've heard someone comment on a performance of a young lady of exceptional talent playing a difficult piece flawlessly on a quality musical instrument as "BLOODY AWFUL". I can only refer you to the word found in the Dictionary (Ingorance)-- Def; the condition of being uneducated, unaware, uninformed or lack of knowledge. Regards; JIM D.

Flawless..

Talented..doubtless

However, at the risk of also being called Ignorant , it also left me cold and not at all inspired....its a matter of taste. Sorry.

I must agree that this might not be of your cup of tea music but dismissing the talent and ability here as Bloody Awful is insulting. JIM D. P.S. I learned many years ago that good music is not as bad as it sounds!!!

This type of music may be an acquired taste on an accordion but I find the complex harmonies fascinating and that for me has always been an important part of music for me.

The clue is in the title.. “Competition”. It’s about virtuosity, and the pathway to a possible career in music or teaching, or she may just enjoy the ride. I have an occasional lesson from an ex national champion, she certainly doesn’t play in a “competition” style now, far from it. Her brother started and she followed along..
It’s a mistake to try the judge the standards of one style by another.

I fully acknowledged the young ladies technical ability ''although of high technical standard' . The fact that is came out, to me, as a mad jumble of notes is down to the composer as presumably the player was playing extremely well whatever said composer wrote.

I posted a performance on another site and was amazed at the emotional responses.
There was unanimity that the Roland sounded nothing like an accordion and that was down to the very poor quality of their sampling.
I don't think anybody took the time to notice that one sample was a clarinet (from Orchestral) and the other a Dual accordion+banjo!

Before writing a word like "awful" I think it is worth asking "Do I really just mean I don't like this."
Test:
How many pieces did Sonia Roz play? Were they all identical? How does her performance fit with the "proficient" thread?

Could we host a competition in this country and attract young peformers with such obvious dedication?
Personally I've always been a bit of a dabbler but I stand in awe of people who dedicate their lives to mastering an instrument.

And right there is the problem ............to me it sounded "awful"...............as George honestly stated and I agree........she may be a fabulous player and I would love to hear her play something I know......but here is another rub.....there is such a variety of music played and demonstrated on here but a lot of members will only rave about the prima donnas and the superbly talented who seem to play (to me) the classic or obscure. These members seem to deride and dismiss the "ordinary" music ....three chord tricks, talentless three chord pop music....terrible atrocities carried out on accordions in the name of german folk music.....to paraphrase a few of the lines that have been written before about accessible (to use a trendy hip phrase)....well some of us do like that type of music and did not like what came up here..........90 % of the members here would blench if they heard shredding on an electric guitar and dismiss it as noise .....regardless of the artists skill levels.....that is all that was meant......you guys....we guys do take things a bit ....personally...... sometimes....... :b

Oh and before anyone writes that just saying "I don't like it" is pointless, well so easily the argument can go the other way.......

for those who like technically brilliant fast playing there is an interesting you tube of norman mackay playing the bluebird ( not the bluebell) polka on a shand morino ( which for those who don't know is a 'diatonic' instrument. Its a remarkable bit of playing by a brilliant player but to be honest I don't find it particularly pleasant to listen to . There is also a you tube sound clip of the legendary Will Starr playing the same tune.

I may be mistaken here, but I fail to see where anyone posting in this thread has dismissed or made comments to deride "ordinary" music most of us play for entertainment every day. The original post was of a young talented accordionist playing a difficult piece for the sake of competition. In these competitions simple and entertaining tunes used may get applause but receive no points for ability. Musically yours; JIM D.

I remember other posts around the site Jim ....I have a very good memory and draw on it in these forum "conversations", so if you cannot remember your previous post on another thread dismissing modern pop music as rhythmic noise then okay  ,.....my missus cannot remember yesterday......!

Anyway , that's it I've said my piece ,not going to start a flame war ....see ya.....

P.S. I have fixed the missing post of After The Ball if interested still.....if not, fair do's

Cheers

CJ

I regret posting the Sonia Roz piece because this is the first time I've seen people upset here.
So here's a thought:
There is a site called Birds.org.uk it includes people who
watch birds
sketch birds
photograph birds
are taxidermists
like chicken soup.
Can they all live happily together and what might make it easier for them?

No.. thanks for posting it. I loved it. It was great to see someone so young pushing the bounds beyond the usual waltzes, reels, and polkas.

I think it'll be many years before I'm ready to attempt 'A Night in Tunisia' on my box!

Cheers
Chris
