Can anyone please point me to up to date instructions for recording video on an old windows 10 desktop computer ?
I have a logitech camera/microphone and a zealsound “proffessional” microphone, to use with the computer, and am aware that the computer has its own microphone.
None of the instructions which I have seen on youtube seem to work on my computer, including moviemaker, create and photos.
I have used the logitech for skype, ( and hope to use it for zoom)

Something like a Logitech camera is intended for interactive use like Skype/Zoom. The image quality and the sound quality correspond to phone usage. Recording requires continuous gapless operation, phone calls don't. You'll be better off with some standalone camera, possibly using the desktop computer just for recording sound (though not with the computer microphone, and who knows what the "professional" microphone is like).

One thing that you can pretty much depend on is that the typical video apertures and sensors and exposure times mean that for a good quality video you'll want good light with pretty much any equipment. Like, brightness you would not usually consider sensible.

Thanks Dak but at present I cannot even make a recording on the desktop, regardless of quality, the only success I have had is with an ipad, and that is difficult to set up.

Dak, the zealsound microphone ia a K66, 16 mm diameter, cardioid, 80 hz to 20 khz, sensitivity 45 db +/- 3db, sampling rate 46 kHz, signal to noise ratio 85 db. Is that reasonable quality ?

You make it sound as if it were a bad thing. More seriously: I got that. I just think that you are wasting your time trying to get this setup to run since it will not lead to good results and, more importantly, does not net you any experience that would be relevant for a good solution.

Nope, but at least they are comparatively honest about it. I doubt the 46kHz (more likely 48kHz). 85dB SNR ratio is not good but would probably suffice for recording a loud instrument such as accordion. 80Hz is way too high for getting a good bass rendition. However, for the recording of the sound, whatever you get to work with this microphone will likely be relevant for better equipment a well. So as opposed to the webcam, experimenting with that is not a dead end even if it is not going to be the end of the road.

Do you think my ipad will better quality video/audio

Hi Colin, I use the windows 10 native program called “camera”. It comes with windows and the icon looks like a little camera. It’s fine for YouTube. Is your camera built in, like in a laptop? That should work, or you will have to connect your camera, and make sure it is selected in your settings.

When you start “camera” look on the right side, where you can select from photo or video. If you hover over the little video camera it will say “take video.” Click it, and the recording should start. The video that it takes will be saved in a folder called “camera roll.”

Does it work that far?

Btw, Jerry will be available on the zoom on Sunday to help with your setup. But let’s see how far we can get before that to make it easier.

The info for the zoom on Sunday, where I will post the link, is in this post:

Tom, Great minds, after much fiddling about with youtube google and microsoft and authenticator I found a help video which mentioned “camera” as being windows default but not very comprehensive. And I had just got to look at my first trial video when my wife kindly made a cup of tea.
Yes it does work that far, but I have to try and find camera roll now, just give me 10 minutes please.

Sounds good! Are you getting hammered by this big storm? “Camera roll” is in another folder called “Pictures”. They don’t make it easy!

Tom, yes clicked on the 3 dots and it was there in camera roll, and the sound is superb just as good as the best, specially if you are only one step away from hearing aids, thanks Tom.

Ok, now if you haven’t done so, you need to upload to YouTube. Do you have an account there? You can go to YouTube.com, sign in (or sign up if you need to), then hit the + sign to upload, by following the prompts.

Not a simple way, but when you are uploading it you will have the option to select the part that you want.

Ok, thanks
If you do want to trim your video, right click on it in the file explorer and “open with” photos. On the upper left you will see “trim”. Select the area you want to keep, and select “save copy as.”
