Hi all,

(Hope this is the right forum for this.)

At the Sheet Music Stack, I'm celebrating Felix Burns' birthday, 5th November, by offering his personal favourite - Woodland Flowers, also known as Flowers of the Forest - as a free download.

It's in Piano or Lead sheet versions, at The Sheet Music Stack.

Or for more information about Felix Burns, here's an article.

This is the original, definitive version as Felix Burns wrote it! Other variants are available, but not from me. I think this was his favourite piece because it was his bestseller, running to more than 70 editions, and therefore most lucrative. He did have a large family (13 children) to keep.

Re: "Woodland Flowers, also known as Flowers of the Forest"

Are you sure?

Either way, it should be well out of copyright and available to us all:

"the melody was recorded c. 1615–1625 in the John Skene of Halyards Manuscript as "Flowres of the Forrest", although it might have been composed earlier." (see: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flowers_of_the_Forest)

(Apologies if I 've got the wrong end of the stick)

I did manage to download the tune - I asked Kim to sort out the code but what she did doesn't seem to have worked.

You are collectively right - it's not the same tune as the Flowers of the Forest" lament that was played at Prince Philip's funeral

It is the tune that is being played in @dunlustin 's first video

I strongly agree that the tune ‘Woodland Flowers’ has no connection with the one known as ‘The Flowers o’ the Forest.
In 1513 the Scots took a hammering from the English at the Battle of Flodden. The loss of life is still commemorated each year in the Scottish Border town of Selkirk when the Colours are Cast (a flag waving ceremony) in the town square to remember the one soldier who survived the battle while 79 of his comrades were lost. I believe the song called ‘The Flowers o’ the Forest’ commemorates this event and has since become established as the standard music to be played when loss of life (mostly in military situations) is remembered.

I believe that 'Flowers' has such a strong association that it is often just called 'The Lament.'
However 'blyth' your world view, you'd be hard pressed to see it as a Schottische

Always played on the pipes on Remembrance Sunday.
I'll be out next Sunday with the pipe band

You're right, it's not that one.

It didn't work for me either. i.e. "You can't use this voucher with this product"

The first, not the second.

Though I have a copy of the same tune (as the first) sold as Flowers of the Forest.

You're right, it's out of copyright, available from me or anywhere else you can find it.

I managed to get the free download Boxplayer and it's easy to sight read, allowing for a degree of improvisation too. I can imagine it being played in the very wide Scottish tuning in the style of Jimmy Shand and is a perfect compliment to the Bluebell polka - just up your street. There are quite a few tunes offered free on the site too.
